From the two examples provided, Vander Weyden (first) and De La Tour (second) please identify which one displays classical light and which one Baroque. Follow this by stating which type of light do you prefer and why. Keep this all to a few sentences.
Vander Weyden's piece displays a classicist use of light while De La Tour's piece shows a Baroque use of light. In Vander Weyden's piece, everything from the subject to the background and smaller details in the painting (i.e. the beads in the man's hands as well as the spool laying next to the female figure) are equally lit. During the Classical era in fine arts, artists studied light as well as perspective, draping, and the figure. In De La Tour's piece, his Baroque style dealt more with creating drama rather than studying light; the light isn't emitted from a general source but from a single point-- the candle-- and the contrast with the massive patches of darkness and shadow creates a more melancholy, emotional feel than that made in Classical painting.
ReplyDeleteThe first piece, Vander Wayden's, demonstrates the use of Classical lighting while the other piece, De La Tour's, demonstrates the Baroque style of lighting. Personally, I enjoy the Baroque style much more because of it's dynamic contrast. Also, artists I enjoy such as Rembrandt come from that movement. I also find that the Baroque style leaves the viewer with a more pensive feeling, which i prefer over the Classical style which feels almost cartoonish.
ReplyDeleteVander Wayden's art represents classical light, while De La Tour's represents baroque lighting. I prefer the baroque lighting because it seems to have more realism when it comes to the light and darkness of the shadows.

ReplyDeleteVander Wayden’s art displays classical light while De La tour’s art represent baroque light. I prefer the baroque light much more than classical light because it has more realistic detail and intense emotions.
ReplyDeleteVander Wayden's piece displays classical light, whereas De La tour’s piece displays baroque light. I feel more attached to Wayden's piece because the contrast is creating a totally different mood in the piece. The light emitted by the candle is accentuating the main areas in the piece making it more deep.
ReplyDeleteWayden's piece shows classical light while Tour's piece shows baroque light. I prefer baroque light because it gives a concentrated area to the piece. Also, I feel like the light is used in a more meaningful way.
ReplyDeleteBaroque light vs. Classical light
ReplyDeleteMost of the comments seem like they prefer baroque light more. Although I do like classical lights in some situations; like when I want to stay truely realistic and keep all the details, I also prefer Baroque light setting most of the time.
I like Baroque light because it usually gives artworks the dramatic effect that grabs peoples' eyes right away. It also helps the viewers to understand the feeling the artist wants to portray, or the feeling of atmosphere. I think it definately shows more personality and thinking process of the artist.

Vander Weyden displays classical light and De la Tour uses baroque light. I believe that both pieces are unrealistic lightings; the painter uses light to manipulate an image to their preferences. Weyden wanted everything to be visible to allow the viewer to understand where and what the subject is doing. De la Tour wanted to play with the light more and suggest what the subject may be doing by creating recognizable silhouettes. Both uses of light would never be seen in real life. They both dramatize the light by showing more or less of it. I prefer baroque lighting because I'm really into high contrast, and high contrast can only be achieved with one direct light. I love how in De la Tour the light completely exposes the face, but blends the body into the surrounding. The piece is more entertaining to me.
ReplyDeleteVander Wayden's piece shows classical light as opposed De La tour’s which displays baroque light. You could clearly tell because the first piece shows brightness with bright colors while the second piece has a more dramatic lighting effect with dark mysterious colors.
ReplyDeleteI would prefer the Baroque painting because it gets rid of a lot of the detail in the object and there is a big contrast between the background and surroundings with what the object has the light focused on.

ReplyDeleteVander Weyden displays classical use of light while De La Tour uses the baroque use of light. Vander's piece is easier to see the objects because of the application of light. Light is all around in this painting which allows you to see all the details. De La Tour's light source is a smaller light source such as a candle. This painting appears to be done at night objects are more blurred and there is less detail. I prefer baroque because the lighting gives a different mood to the painting. The lack of detail makes the viewer look deeper into the painting to see all the details you would miss at first glance.

Vander Wayden display classical light, while De La Tour's represents baroque lighting. I also prefer the baroque lighting because it gives interesting atmosphere. It interests me more due to the contrast between where the light hits and where it doesn't. It gives interesting atmosphere.

From the first painting Vander Weyden I would say that is from the classicist period because the colors are much more vivid than the second De La Tour. I would say that the second is baroque because there is a single light source. In the Vander Weyden there is more than one source of light. I like the De La Tour much more because the one light source seems to be more thought out and refined.

Vander Weyden's piece, which used classical light is very clean. There is only enough mount of value(shadow), so even the edge of the work is shown clearly. It has beautiful small details like female figure's dress or beads in male figure's hand. However, Weyden's piece looks lifeless to me. Female's face is so pale, even her chicks are white, and she looks like some kind of statue made out of ivory. Also, the piece feels little too calm.
ReplyDeleteUnlike Weyden's piece, De La Tour uses Baroquean light. Whole piece is covered with dark shade except the center, where the candle is. It is hard to see every single details, but very dramatic. Shade creates special atmosphere and adds some kind of feelings to the piece. Figure looks alive, and the piece is strong and expressive(not sure if it's right term). I prefer La Tour's piece for those reasons.
Weyden's piece uses classical lighting as a clean layer of light is present through out the entire piece. The piece is extremely clear and the details are very strong because of it. De La Tour uses baroque light as there is a large section of dark shade and only light is coming from the candle on the desk, illuminating the women's face. I like both lightings as they work in different ways. But I definitely prefer baroque because it always adds a mood of mystery. It makes the piece have depth and to me it is more intersting. It may be because my favorite color is black and i like dark things in general...
